It was an ironic choice to use the catchphrase of an ad campaign that ripped off the women’s liberation movement to sell its product as the headline for an evening celebrating four generations of women pioneers of post-modern dance.
That 1968 Virginia Slims campaign (“you’ve come a long way, baby”) eventually ran out of steam when marketing polls revealed that the 21st century woman takes her freedom for granted and sees no reason to burn her push-up bras.
But legends-in-their-own-time Anna Halprin, at 94, and Simone Forti, at 79, have plenty of steam left, as they demonstrated in solo performances at the Joe Goode Annex on September 27th, within a program curated by Hope Mohr that traced the lineage of post-modern dance through four generations.
